Common Household Hazardous Waste

Common Household Hazardous WasteDomestic waste is currently exempt from the hazardous waste regulations except with regard to asbestos.  The purpose of this document is to highlight common household waste products which are also found in small companies and are hazardous.  Please be aware that disposal of business waste as domestic waste is a crime and will lead to prosecution by the Environment Agency.  Below is a guide to some of the different types of common hazardous waste, many of which can be recycled safely by your local council and diverted from landfill.  Click here to locate your local council details.

  • Asbestos
  • Batteries and accumulators
  • Bleach
  • Computer monitors (CRTs)
  • Fluorescent tubes/gas discharge lamps
  • Fridges/Freezers/Air conditioning
  • Oils (machine/engineering/motor)
  • Paint/varnish (containing solvents and certain pigments)
  • Pesticides/herbicides
  • Petrol
  • Single use cameras and other disposable items containing batteries
  • Thinners/white sprits
  • TVs

Items with the following symbols on their labels should also be treated as hazardous:
